Penistone Saw Mill, PENISTONE, Barnsley

Saw mill complex reused for flats with the frontage retained. Maps of 1851 show two small cottages on the saw mill site documented as a shop, house and saw pit (Hey 2002). The polygon is filled by the time of the 1893 mapping. The land was part of the village green in the medieval period. Subdivided into smaller plots at the Penistone Enclosure award. The Saw Mill fills a plot of land that respects enclosure boundaries, therefore legibility of the former enclosure landscape is fragmentary.
